Ludwigsstraße, Mainz : LU: a world of leisure in Mainz city centre

Ludwigsstraße is one of the main arteries in Mainz city centre. It serves as a stimulus for the whole of Mainz. With the revamp taking place on Ludwigsstraße, the street affectionately known to locals as the Lu, the heart of the city of Mainz is once again set to pound – in the LU: on the Lu. The LU: will be a real experience for Mainz locals and visitors to the city. In Mainz’s new city quarter, we want to play up the city centre’s existing strengths, close gaps in the offering and focus on Mainz’s original culture of pleasure. The LU: will be a powerful draw for everyone in Mainz city centre.

Location

The comfort begins as soon as you arrive at the modernised multi-storey car park. It has around 300 parking spaces, around 15 car-sharing parking spaces and around 350 bicycle parking spaces. In addition, 19 multi-storey car parks located within a radius of one kilometre have space for almost 8,300 cars. Cyclists will also find further parking options for their bikes around the LU:. Furthermore, two public transport hubs and a nearby bus stop provide direct connections. Mainz Central Station is just a ten-minute walk away. The various car- and bike-sharing schemes in Mainz provide alternative ways of getting to and from the LU:.

Concept

The Lu usage concept is unique in Rhineland-Palatinate. The LU: is set to become a place where Mainz gets together. Not just for shopping, but also for experiences. We are convinced that retail today needs a rethink. There should be a place here for everything that makes the city worth living in. That is why, besides attractive retail stores, Mainz’s flair for pleasure and culture should also fill the LU: with life. Retail, pleasure, culture: three things that combine to create a diverse city experience. Need some examples? The people of Mainz famously live in the city’s squares, which is why the concept includes lively indoor and outdoor squares. This starts with the forecourt, which will provide inviting open spaces. Places where people can spend quality time can also be found inside the LU: with a pop-up hall on the ground floor where international brands, local favourites and start-ups in temporary shop units can showcase their goods. There will also be a delicious range of food from regional establishments in the pop-up hall.

Energy concept/city climate

Sustainability is an integral part of it all: the revamp of the retail location on Mainz’s Ludwigsstraße also includes comprehensive measures to improve the city’s climate. For one thing, the sustainability concept focuses on positive climatic effects generated by creating extensive green areas in a place that was previously almost completely sealed: all flat roofs are being extensively greened. In the inner courtyard leading to Deutsche Bank and the inner courtyard of the hotel, so-called intensive greening is planned, using trees and shrubs, among other things. As part of the greening measures, new space for insects will also be created and biodiversity in the city will be improved. Energy will be generated using geothermal energy and photovoltaic systems.
